Student Athletes

At school, we expect our students to model derech eretz, which can be defined as decent, polite, respectful, thoughtful, and civilized behavior. Our expectations for our athletes, who are competing as representatives of HACD, are as follows:

  1. Player will keep up with homework and maintain good grades (C- or better).
  2. Player will show respect to teammates, coaches, referees, the opposing team, and their families.
  3. Player will demonstrate good sportsmanship during games and practice.
  4. Players who regularly miss practice will not start and will see reduced playing time.
  5. Player will learn the rules of the game and will follow them.
  6. Players who regularly misbehave or show lack of interest will be asked to leave the team and will receive a pro-rated refund.

Go Lions!

HACD Lions compete in five sports: Track and Field, Cross Country, Soccer, Basketball, and Volleyball. With the exception of our Basketball team, which competes in the Troy Catholic Youth Organization, all of our teams compete in the Friendship League. The Troy CYO includes local schools, parishes, and organizations; the Friendship League includes local public and private schools from around the Capital Region. Unless otherwise noted, teams are comprised of students in grades 5-8.

Cross Country

Cross County competes on outdoor trails at many of the public and private schools in the area. We regularly have students who place in the top 10 and have had numerous students finish with times around the 6 minute mark. While some look at this as a competition, which it is, other see it as an opportunity to get into great shape while having fun with their friends. Cross Country helps athletes build lower body strength, improve their endurance, and improve their overall physical fitness.

Soccer

HACD is proud to offer a 100 x 55 yard soccer field located in the back of the school. While the field is used during recess and PE class, we also have the opportunity to host several modified level games each year. Younger students are encouraged to participate in our clinics, which help reinforce the basic skills and rules of the game. Our program is an excellent way of experiencing high school level soccer at an early age and without the daily commitment that is often associated with JV and varsity level athletics.

Volleyball

Our volleyball program is a favorite amongst the students at HACD and a great way for younger children to experience what it would be like to play at the high school level. Many of the gymnasiums we play in offer full sized regulation courts located in top notch facilities. Volleyball is a team sport, which requires players to work together in order to be successful.

Track and Field

HACD athletes participate in field events such as shot-put, discus, long jump, high jump, and triple jump. On the track we offer the mile run, 80m hurdles, 400m relay, medley relay, 60m, 100m, 200m, 400, and the 800m. There are four meets a year including the Championship Meet, which awards the top 5 finishers in each event. In years past we have held meets at local high schools while the Championship has been held at Rensselaer High and Frank Bailey Field (Union College).

Basketball

Basketball is our longest running athletic program and fields numerous teams annually. There is a 2nd grade feeder program, which focuses on skill building, and a 3rd and 4th grade Pee Wee program, which operates within an independent conference. The Biddy (5th and 6th grade) and Junior (7th and 8th grade) teams are extremely competitive and have been division champions 10 times over the past 12 years. HACD has won numerous independent tournaments since the inception of the program, finished as runners up in the CYO Championship Tournament on three separate occasions, and won the Championship Tournament in 2011.
