Dan Scher, Class of 1997
Dan Scher – known to many as the beloved director of Camp Givah – has been active in the Capital District’s Jewish community for many years. For 10 years he served as an advisor for the local chapter of Kadima, the middle school Jewish youth group. Building on this experience, he joined the staff of Camp Givah. Under his leadership, the Jewish day camp in the Helderberg mountains has grown to over 120 campers each summer, and is happy to have Scher return as director this June for his seventh successful summer.
Upon graduating from HACD, Scher received a degree in history with a minor in Judaic studies from The George Washington University. He then decided to pursue a career doing what he loves most – working with children. He attended The College of St. Rose for graduate school, receiving his Masters of Science in Childhood Education, becoming certified in childhood education, special education and social studies. He has recently received National Board Certification. He has taught at Hebrew Academy, as well as in the Schenectady and East Greenbush school districts. Scher and his wife Aliza live in Delmar with their two children, Ellie – a first grader at HACD – and Evan - an eager future kindergartener.
